Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 slices slices of bread (preferably day-old for better texture)
  • 2 cups diced apples (sweet varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (whole or almond) for a lighter option
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar for a rich, molasses-like promise
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • a pinch salt
  • powdered sugar (optional for a delightful finish)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9 × 13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  3. Layer the slices of bread evenly in the greased dish; a little overlap is fine.
  4. Distribute the diced apples over the bread.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over everything, ensuring that all pieces are thoroughly soaked.
  6. Let the casserole sit for about 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the casserole has set.
  8. Serve warm, dusted lightly with powdered sugar.

Notes

Leftovers keep well in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes. For a fun twist, try adding nuts, cranberries, or a splash of bourbon to the custard.
