  • 1 each onion, chopped The base for any good stew, offering sweetness once softened.
  • 2 each carrots, sliced A touch of bright color and earthy sweetness.
  • 2 each potatoes, diced Gives the stew a hearty texture while soaking up the broth flavors.
  • 3 cups beef broth The essential liquid, rich and full of umami.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds a hint of garlic for aromatic depth.
  • 1 teaspoon thyme Adds a lovely herbaceous note.
  • to taste none salt and pepper Essential seasonings that elevate every component.
  • 2 cups dumpling mix Store-bought for convenience, or homemade for the adventurous spirit.

Method

Cooking
  1. In a large pot, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up as you go.
  2. Once it’s nicely browned, drain any excess fat, then add the chopped onion, carrots, and potatoes to the pot. Cook until the vegetables soften, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Pour in the beef broth and stir in the garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, allowing the flavors to combine.
  4. While the stew simmers, prepare your dumplings according to the package directions or, if you’re using a homemade recipe, whip those up now.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling mix into the simmering stew. Cover the pot and let it cook undisturbed for about 15 minutes, or until the dumplings are puffed and cooked through.
  6. Serve this warm, cozy meal hot, and enjoy every comforting bite!

Notes

Best served right from the pot. Consider adding a rustic hunk of bread on the side and a simple green salad for balance. A sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan over the dumplings adds an extra layer of flavor. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days, or frozen for up to three months.
