Ingredients
  

Wet Ingredients
  • 3 pieces ripe bananas Make sure they are very ripe for optimal sweetness.
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup Substitute depending on your taste preference.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Dry Ingredients
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips Optional; can substitute with nuts or dried fruit.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth.
  3. Stir in the applesauce, honey (or maple syrup), and vanilla extract until well combined.
Mixing
  1. In another bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Gradually add the dry mix into the banana mixture, stirring gently until just combined.
  3. If desired, fold in the chocolate chips.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing out the top.
  2. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  3. Let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For best flavor, use very ripe bananas. To store, wrap the cooled bread tightly and keep it in an airtight container for up to three days. For longer storage, slice and freeze individually.
